Can You Touch the Elephants at Big Boy Elephant Sanctuary in Chiang Mai?
Short answer: no. Big Boy’s visit is "observe and feed". You watch the elephants from a distance and you don't touch them. The only feeding is vitamin balls placed at a feeding table, never from your hand. Nobody bathes with or rides the elephants, and guests don't go out on the trail alongside the herd.
That surprises some first-time visitors, so this guide explains what the day actually looks like, why the camp works this way, and how to decide whether it's the right half-day for you.
What "observe and feed" means on the day
Both Big Boy half-days follow the same pattern. Re-check figures on the product page before you pay.
| Morning half-day | Afternoon half-day | |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel pickup | 07:00–07:30 | 11:30–12:00 |
| Back at your hotel | around 14:00 | around 18:30 |
| Adult (9+) | ฿1,500 | ฿1,500 |
| Child (4–8) | ฿1,100 | ฿1,100 |
| Infant (0–3) | free | free |
| Deposit online (25%) | ฿375 adult / ฿275 child | ฿375 adult / ฿275 child |
At the camp you get a welfare and safety briefing, then time watching the herd from the viewing area. Feeding happens at a feeding table: vitamin balls are set out and you watch the elephants come and eat. There's also a Pad Thai cooking session and lunch for guests. Exact order on the day may shift with traffic and weather. Transfer time (round-trip) is 180 minutes.
What you won't do:
- touch, stroke or hug the elephants
- feed them from your hand or palm
- bathe with or ride them, and guests don't go out on the trail alongside the herd
Why Big Boy keeps a distance
The booking pages give the camp's own reason: bathing and riding, and going out on the trail alongside the herd, "require controlling the elephants", which goes against the sanctuary's principle of respecting their natural behaviour and freedom. Keeping guests at a distance follows the same idea. The elephants decide where they go and when they come to the table; guests adjust to them, not the other way round.
For many visitors that's the point. You see elephants behaving like elephants (eating, moving around, interacting with each other) rather than standing still for a photo.
Who Big Boy suits, and who it doesn't
A good fit if you:
- want a no-riding, no-contact elephant visit you feel good about
- are travelling with children who are happy to watch rather than handle animals (children must stay with a parent at all times)
- like photos of elephants behaving naturally, without people in every frame
- want a half-day that leaves the rest of the day free
Probably not for you if you:
- want to bathe with elephants or feed them by hand
- need step-free access and haven't checked first (distances, stairs, terrain and toilets: confirm with the sanctuary)
- can't manage the stated transfer time (180 minutes round-trip)
Morning or afternoon?
Pick the morning if you're an early riser and want your afternoon and evening free. Pick the afternoon if you landed late the night before or prefer a slow start. Same fares, same "observe and feed" format. See morning vs afternoon for more.
